Luminous (quince as condensed light) (2014)

The ancient Egyptians were right to locate the god Ra centrally in their spiritual lives as all Earthly energy sources ultimately derive from the sun. The sun also drives the growth of plants allowing leaves to power the transformation from pollinated flower to ripe fruit. To me, quinces embody the sun – their colour is both a reflection and reminder of that yellow disk. The delicate flavour of quince jelly is matched by its subtle colour. When held to the light it is as if the sun’s light has been captured, radiating from within.

Quince jelly, glass jars, timber, light source. Dimensions 130 x 10 x 25 (h) cm.
